Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2024
- India's Ministry of Environment has recently implemented new regulations that make it more difficult for manufacturers of disposable plastic products to label them as 'biodegradable'.
- The updated Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2024, now require that biodegradable plastics not only degrade through biological processes in certain environments but also leave behind microplastics.
- Biodegradable plastics are treated before being sold and are expected to break down naturally when discarded, although there are no tests yet to determine whether they fully degrade.
- Compostable plastics, on the other hand, degrade but require industrial or large municipal waste management facilities to do so.
Entering the electric vehicle market with Xiaomi SU7
- Chinese consumer tech company Xiaomi has launched its first electric vehicle, the SU7, in Beijing.
- The company, known for affordable smartphones and home appliances, is now entering the fiercely competitive electric vehicle (EV) sector in China, the world's largest car market.
- According to media sources, the base SU7 model will be priced at 215,900 yuan ($29,868).
- The sleek and sporty vehicle will be available in nine colors and includes features such as “sound simulation” to recreate the thrill of driving a sports car, karaoke equipment and a mini-fridge.

- Multiple Myeloma Awareness Month is observed every year in March to raise awareness about the rare type of blood cancer that develops in the bones and other parts of the body.
- What is multiple myeloma?
- Multiple myeloma is a type of blood cancer that originates in plasma cells, a type of white blood cell found in the bone marrow. In patients with myeloma, cancer cells grow rapidly, crowding out healthy blood cells and causing various health problems.
- These malignant cells also secrete abnormal proteins that can impair physiological functions such as kidney function.
What is T+0 Trading Settlement Cycle?
- Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE) have started trading on an alternate basis in the T+0 rolling settlement cycle in the equity segment.
- This new settlement cycle allows for same-day settlement of transactions, in addition to the current T+1 settlement cycle.
- The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has issued operational guidelines for the launch of this shorter settlement cycle.
- The T+0 trading settlement cycle, also known as same-day settlement, is a facility for clearing and settlement of funds and securities on the same day of trade.
- Under this cycle, the transactions will be settled on the same day after the T+0 market closes. If the investors sell the shares, they will get the money in their account on the same day and the buyer will also get the shares in their demat account on the same day of transaction.
The Antarctic Circumpolar Current responds to global climate: Experiments
- A recent study published in the journal Nature shows that the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC), an ocean current connecting the Indian, Atlantic and Pacific oceans, has been accelerating in recent decades due to a warming climate.
- The study, which examined the speed of the ACC over the past 5.3 million years, found that current global climate responds by speeding up or slowing down, which has significant implications for the stability of the Antarctic ice sheet.

Big increase in oil import from Russia, Indian Oil's agreement with 'Rosneft' company
- India's state-owned Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) has signed an agreement with Russia's major oil producer Rosneft, under which the import of crude oil from Russia will be increased to a large extent.
- According to a statement issued by Rosneft, the CEO of the company, Igor Sechin, visited India recently. On this occasion Sechin and IOC President Madhav Vaidya signed the agreement. Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Puri was present on this occasion. The company has clarified that discussions have been held with 'Rosneft' and Indian oil companies in the future, along with increasing trade in local currencies instead of dollars.
- European countries have reduced imports from Russia after Russia attacked Ukraine. After that, some countries including India are exporting cheap oil from Russia. In the last year, oil import from Russia to India has increased 20 times and in March, India has become the largest importer of Russia's 'Urals Grade Crude'.
