A central panel has recommended a ban on 'ferocious' dog breeds
- In a major step aimed at curbing the rising incidence of deadly dog attacks across the country, the Union government has directed all states and Union Territories to immediately ban the import, sale and breeding of 25 breeds of dogs.
- The decision has been taken on the recommendations of an expert committee set up by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying under the Ministry of Agriculture.
- The panel was established in response to growing concerns and complaints from citizen groups and animal welfare organizations about serious and sometimes fatal attacks by certain breeds of domestic dogs.
New Election Commissioner 2024
- The High Power Selection Committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appointed two retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu as the new Election Commissioner of India. The appointments were made on March 14, 2024 as per the recommendations of the panel.
- Other members of the selection committee included Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary.
- The appointments are to fill the vacancies created by the retirement of Anup Chandra Pandey on February 15 and the sudden resignation of Arun Goyal on March 9.
- Although the government welcomed the appointments as a step towards ensuring the independence and impartiality of the Election Commission, the selection process has come under scrutiny from the opposition.
- Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Choudhary, who is part of the selection panel, has expressed his displeasure, questioning the criteria used to select candidates.
India will export wheels for railways
- Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav recently announced that India is on track to become a major exporter of forged wheels used in trains, after being an importer for more than six decades.
- The minister disclosed that the new plant being set up at Gummidipoondi near Chennai will start manufacturing forged wheels for Vande Bharat trains in the next 16-18 months.
- 650 crore investment in the first phase
- The minister said that the plant is a joint venture and the partners have invested Rs 650 crore in the first phase of the project.
- The plant, currently under construction, will have an annual production capacity of 2.5 lakh forged wheels.
- Out of the total production of 2.5 lakh wheels, 80,000 wheels will be used for Indian Railways Vande Bharat trains, while the remaining 1.70 lakh wheels will be exported to other countries.
- This is a significant change for India which has been importing various types of forged wheels from countries like UK, Brazil, China, Japan, Russia and Ukraine for the past 60-70 years.
The panel recommended a roadmap for simultaneous elections in India
- A high-level committee headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind has recommended a clear roadmap for holding elections to Parliament, state assemblies and local bodies simultaneously in the country.
- The 22-member committee, which submitted its report to President Draupadi Murmu, suggested a two-phase process for synchronizing the electoral cycle of the three tiers of government with the aim of improving governance, reducing election costs and reducing disruptions.
- As per the committee's recommendations, the first phase involves aligning the schedule of Lok Sabha and state assembly elections. This will be achieved through a “one-time transitory measure” where an “appointed date” is identified by the central government immediately after the Lok Sabha elections.
The government took action against 18 OTT platforms
- In a major crackdown on streaming services that show inappropriate content, the Indian government has banned 18 over-the-top (OTT) platforms for hosting “obscene, indecent and obscene” content despite repeated warnings.
- The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) has blocked access to these platforms, along with their respective websites, mobile apps and social media handles, in violation of Indian laws.
- Banned OTT services include Dreams Films, Voovi, Yessma, Uncut Adda, Tri Flicks, X Prime, Neon X VIP, Besharams, Hunters, Rabbit, Xtramood, Nuefliks, MoodX, Mojflix, Hot Shots VIP, Fugi, Chikooflix and Prime Play .
- Apart from these 18 platforms, the ministry also disabled 19 websites, 10 apps (seven on Google Play Store and three on Apple App Store), and 57 social media accounts linked to these services.
Reliance Jio launches new plans with Jio Plus, an OTT platform with…
- Reliance Jio is the leading telecom company in the country and they have launched 5G services in many cities of the country. Reliance Jio, the largest telecom company in the country, has launched Jio Plus service for its customers. With Jio Plus, the company is going to offer unlimited service to customers for 1 month. Jio has launched a new plan of Rs 399 for its customers. Jio, owned by renowned businessman Mukesh Ambani, says that users will also be able to add three additional connections with this Jio postpaid plan. For each additional connection, customers will have to pay Rs 99.
- Jio's Rs 399 plan: In Jio Plus's Rs 399 plan, if the customer takes three additional connections, they will have to pay a total of Rs 696 (399+99+99+99). A total of 75 GB data is offered in this postpaid plan. That is, customers will have to spend around Rs 174 per month on a single SIM in a family plan with a total of 4 connections. Apart from this, Jai customers with higher data consumption can opt for a 100GB plan. For this, one has to pay Rs 699 for the first connection and Rs 99 more with each additional connection.
- Offers for Jio Customers: Neck offers have been launched along with Reliance Jio's new Jio Plus plan. Under the Jio True 5G Welcome Offer, customers will be offered unlimited 5G data. This data plan will be available for use by every SIM card user. Apart from this there is no daily limit for data which means customers can use as much data as they want.
700 Indian students return 'home' from Canada; Action will be taken in case of fake visa
- The Canadian government has decided to send back 700 Indian students who went to study in Canada. The Canada Border Agency has sent a notice to these students to travel to India after it was revealed that the documents and visas given by these students to educational institutions in Canada were fake.
- According to a report by The Indian Express, these 700 students had applied for the visa through a travel agent named Brijesh Mishra in Jalandhar. For this he took Rs.16 lakh from each student. This included admission fees and living expenses at the prestigious Humber College in Canada.
- These 700 students went for education in Canada in 2018-19. However, after applying for permanent resident status in Canada, their documents will be checked. This time it was revealed that the admission letter given by him for the visa was fake. Many of these students have completed their studies and have also obtained work permits in Canada.
- A travel agent in Jalandhar told 'The Indian Express' that in this case the students were given the admit card of the same college which the academic year has started. So it was the turn of the students to either change colleges, or they had to wait till the next semester. Hence, the current semester was not mentioned on their documents while applying for the visa.
ED raids office of 'Church of North India'
- Former Bishop P.C. Various offices of the 'Church of North India' (CNI), which has been in the news due to the Singh scam, were raided by 'ED' on Wednesday. The ED team also raided the office of CNI in Sadar area of Nagpur. The search operation lasted for two hours and various documents were seized.
- This is the second major operation by 'ED' in Nagpur in last two weeks. Controversial Bishop P.C. Singh committed many misdemeanors in schools under 'CNI'. Apart from this, there is an allegation of corruption in the land and other financial matters of the organization. Last year in September, Madhya Pradesh Police's financial crime branch P.C. Sinha was arrested from Nagpur airport.
- ED had also registered a case in the cheating case. In this case, ED raided 11 places across the country on Wednesday. It also included an office in Nagpur. The office of 'CNI' in the area was searched at this time. At this time various documents were inspected and many important documents were seized. Due to this action, there was a stir in the network of 'CNI'.
